First things first, the Lestat Book Coven had a highly stimulating conversation with online vampire film reviewer/guru/expert-Maven of the Eventide of ChezApocalypse. Maven of the Eventide, for many fans of Anne Rice’s works, has done two impeccably researched,insightful reviews of the Interview with the Vampire film and the rather dismal Queen of the Damned film.

For a whole 26 minutes or so, we chatted about the nuances of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, and why there continues to be appeal for the iconic character of the Vampire Lestat.

Unfortunately, the camera frames never automatically switched between both her and my perspective, so the frame is always focused entirely on “Maven of the Eventide!” But, enjoy it nonetheless, even with these  tragic technical glitches. Maven of the Eventide’s comments and enthusiastic, witty way of speaking comes across very well on this particuliar interview.

At Thrillerfest this past month, I had the wonderful, very much unforgettable opportunity to interview Anne Rice (and, I do not need to elaborate on her writing credentials; you know who she is). Thanks to both Anne Rice and her wonderful assistant Becket for making this interview a very enjoyable, stress-free experience.

For me, this was a remarkable opportunity, since in many humble respects, I am just a passionate book blogger, who has been mainly writing rather in-depth posts about Anne Rice’s books for nearly four years and counting. It is not the group itself that allowed this opportunity to happen. Incidentally, this interview came mostly about because of the unwavering support of all 900 (approaching 1000) or so remarkable members of the Lestat Book Coven over at the Facebook Group Page.

I posted the two parts below, and I know there is some continuity issues between the end of Part 1 into Part 2. Due to some inevitable technical glitches, the transition between both parts seems kind of abrupt.  Enjoy it, nonetheless, and thanks again to everyone that enthusiastically has joined in our coven discussions, for all the various individuals that produced such thoughtful questions, finally to Anne Rice and her assistant Becket for making this entire thing possible!!

Our minds are now ensconced in Lestat’s very formative vampire psyche, and the next eighty or so pages of our assigned reading will be dealing with the psychological shock and reaction to him becoming a vampire. So, our assigned reading is Chapter 9 of Part II to Part III- Children of Darkness, in “The Vampire Lestat.”

Discussion Questions:

1. Compare and contrast his first thoughts and actions as a vampire versus how Louis reacted in Interview with the Vampire?

2. Describe the theater sequence, and describe your first reaction it? How does the audience react, in comparison to the audience of the Theatres des Vampires production in Interview with the Vampire? In what ways does this sequence presage that and later performances? What is with the recurrent motif of a theatrical being used to convey something about the vampire lifestyle, and the ways the more mundane world reacts to things that are out-of-the-normal, or defying conventional boundaries? Is there any commentary on the illusory nature of art, and what type of art pushes the limits too far, and whether all art and aesthetic pursuits are ethical?

3. In my interview with Anne Rice at Thrillerfest a few weeks back, she mentioned that the Vampire Lestat would be perfect, as an opera? Do you discern any operatic elements of this book, as told from a more dramatic, almost tragically comic personality, like the Vampire Lestat?

4. What is the legacy of a vampire, as insinuated by Magnus, and do you think that this “legacy” of sorts is a continuing theme in the Vampire Chronicles and Lestat’s journey as a character? Do you think this theme of the legacy, as examined in the beginning of Blood Canticle and really first articulated by Magnus, is something that will continue to be explored in the pages of Prince Lestat?
